Tony Campolo Controversial Quotes: 5 Hot-Button Statements From the Christian Evangelist

By    |   Saturday, 09 May 2015 02:51 AM

Tony Campolo is the self-proclaimed, "Prophet of Red Letter Christianity", according to his website. Red Letter Christians explain that they have one basic goal: To take Jesus seriously by endeavoring to live out His radical, counter-cultural teachings as set forth in Scripture, and especially embracing the lifestyle prescribed in the Sermon on the Mount.

With that position, it is likely that Campolo will make statements that some people find as controversial, even inflammatory. Here are some examples of those types of statements:

2016 Presidential Election

Campolo served as spiritual advisor to President Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky scandal. He indicated how much he would do for Hillary Clinton during her upcoming run for the presidency by saying that, "Should she ask me to organize an Evangelicals for Hillary committee, I would be more than willing to do so."

The Blockade of the Gaza Strip

In a column for the Huffington Post, Campolo proposed a novel solution to helping alleviate the suffering experienced by those Palestinians living in Gaza. Acknowledging the problems faced by Israel to protect themselves while looking for a way to get humanitarian aid through via Israel, Campolo proposes that, "Christians, Jews, and Muslims here in the United States raise funds to purchase the food, medicines, and other essentials that those who live in the Gaza Strip require for survival." He goes on further to declare that it would be a win-win for all parties involved, showing cooperation would go a long way toward improving the image that many secularists have of religion.

On the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Debate

Despite being a Democrat, Campolo takes a very conservative stance on homosexuality. The Gay Christian Network reports that Campolo believes that the Bible forbids all homosexual activity. Rather than attempt to try converting gays to a heterosexual life, he recommends that they practice celibacy.

Abortion

As a pro-life Democrat, Campolo's views on abortion are often at odd with other members of his party. He often cites a study by the Guttmacher Institute, as he did in an interview reported by Religion News Service. Specifically, Campolo cites the statistic that 72 percent of those women who had abortions did so for economic reasons. He is concerned that the Republican Party defines the pro-life position without any counter-argument from the Democratic Party. He attributes this to Democrats not understanding the position that evangelicals have on the issue. If they did, Campolo believes that they would get more support from the evangelicals.

The Rise of ISIS

"We are not going to get rid of terrorism by killing terrorists any more than we can get rid of malaria by killing mosquitoes," was how Campolo described the U.S. efforts to get rid of terrorism on his own website, Red Letter Christians. Instead of killing the terrorists, he proposes removing the oppressive social conditions that breed contempt against Western nations. He believes that many Iraqis were asking Allah to deliver them from the U.S. military, after originally asking Allah to deliver them from the tortures inflicted by the Saddam Hussein regime.
