Tim Keller is a New York Times bestselling author, and a world-renowned minister who has sold more than a million copies of his books, “The Reason for God” and “The Prodigal God.” The success of his books shows why Keller is considered by many to be a pioneer of the urban Christians, with a love for the city and its religious development.

In 1988, Keller started the Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan and built it into one of the biggest in New York City. Here are seven things you might not know about this popular minister:

1. When offered the chance to start the Redeemer Presbyterian Church by Terry Gyger, Tim Keller originally turned the offer down, according to a blog post on his website. He was teaching at the time and had not worked as a pastor for several years. However, after two years of prayer, he chose to take on the challenge and moved to Manhattan in 1989 to start the church.

2. Keller said that the writings of author C.S. Lewis were the foundation of his work in the ministry, an author profile for the 2015 Creation Festival said.

3. While working as a chairman in a program reaching out to the gay population in Philadelphia in the 80s, Keller helped set up a ministry to help people with AIDS, the profile said.

4. Outreach Magazine listed Keller’s Redeemer Presbyterian Church as number one on its list of top church planting churches in America with over 100 churches planted, according to Christian Post.

5. While in Philadelphia in the 80s, Keller was actively involved in evangelistic outreach to Muslims in the city, the author profile said.

6. Tim Keller picked up his bachelor’s degree from Bucknell University, a Master of Divinity from Massachusetts’ Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and went to the Westminster Theological Seminary to receive his Doctor of Ministry, the Biologos Forum said.

7. In 2006, New York magazine listed Keller at the top of the city’s most influential people in the area of religion. “Keller has become the most successful Christian Evangelist in the city by recognizing what marketers have known for decades: that young professionals and artists are ‘disproportionately influential’ in creating the country’s culture and that you have to meet this coveted demographic on its own terms,” the magazine said.
