Abortion laws in Texas, compared to other states nationally, fall somewhere in the middle in terms of strictness.

One study by the Guttmacher Institute ranks Texas at No. 22 in terms of number of restrictions placed on abortion access, The Washington Post noted.

In that study, Oklahoma ranked No. 1, with the most restrictions, while Oregon came in last with no state restrictions.

In Texas, the state requires mandatory counseling before an abortion and a 24-hour waiting period for the procedure after that is received. Twenty-one other states require a 24-hour waiting period, NPR reported, while 24 require no waiting period at all. Three states require a 48-hour waiting period, and just one requires 72 hours.

Texas requires mandatory ultrasounds for pregnant women and parental consent for minors seeking abortions, the Guttmacher Institute noted. Texas is among 24 states that ultrasound provisions in their laws.

The anti-abortion group Americans United for Life ranked Texas at No. 10 nationally, describing it as "one of the most protective states in the nation."

In contrast, NARAL Pro-Choice America gave Texas an F grade on choice-related laws. It described the state's governor and both houses of the legislature as "anti-choice."

In 2011, there were 62 abortion providers in Texas, the Guttmacher Institute said, noting that 93 percent of all counties in Texas in that year did not have an abortion clinic.

Nationally, the institute said, there were 1,720 abortion providers in the United States in 2011.
