South Carolina offers many opportunities for hunting everything from ducks to deer. Here are just a few of the top spots in the Palmetto State for satisfying this outdoor sport.

The Santee Coastal Reserve Wildlife Management Area is among the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources' best draw hunts for ducks, according to Game and Fish magazine. As the newest and largest public waterfowl hunting area in the state, its 24,000 acres include more than 10,000 acres of managed wetlands.

Here, you'll find at least 16 species of ducks, especially gadwalls, blue-winged teal, green-winged teal and shovelers. Scaup, ringnecks and widgeon are also common.

The marsh is divided into three parcels, and the hunts, conducted on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, are conducted once a week on each parcel. Hunters draw for existing blinds before each hunt and are limited to one bag of decoys per blind. Hunters may bring their retrievers, but the area has a good number of alligators.

For deer hunting, there's nothing like Sumter National Forest, in the northwest part of the state, says Field and Stream magazine. From the middle of September to New Year's Day there are no antler restrictions. While there are three main tracts of national forest, the Long Cane and Enoree districts contain higher density of deer and easier access because these areas aren't mountainous. The average rate of deer harvest, according to Field and Stream, is 12 per square mile.

After deer season is over, wild boar are open for hunting. The Palmetto State has the largest wild boar population in the United States, and one of the best places for public land hog hunting is the special wild hog hunt held at Manchester State Forest located near Sumter, Game and Fish magazine reports. Through most of January, hunters are invited to still hunt hogs there. There's also a special dog hunt for wild hogs throughout most of February.

According Game and Fish magazine, the best location to find wild hogs – about 4,000 acres – is the forest along the Wateree River. January is the best time to hog hunt if the river hasn't flooded, but if it has, hunters still can find hogs around the bottomland fringes. Also, hunters do not have to check in before hunting at Manchester. No live hogs are permitted to be removed, and baiting is not allowed.
