Smart Guns or Dumb Idea: Pros and Cons of Technologically Advanced Firearms

By    |   Monday, 11 May 2015 09:52 AM

Since gun control failed in 2013 there's been a lot of talk about what to do to make guns safer, particularly after the tragedy of Sandy Hook. That is how the "smart gun" was born. But is the "smart gun" a dumb idea? Let's take a look at some of the pros and cons.

Pros:

Smart guns are imbedded with a computer chip that renders the firearm useless in anyone but the owner's hands. Provided this feature works every single time, ideally it would prevent an accidental shooting in a home with children.

Since most criminals don't purchase guns legally, in a perfect world, a smart gun would prevent the use of stolen guns being used in a crime. Anti-gunners frequently use the argument that often, a person's gun will be used against them in a crime. A smart gun would prevent this from being possible.

Cons:

With increased complexity, comes reduced reliability. Any mechanical device can and does fail from time to time and, since it's a computer, it would be just a matter of time before hackers can gain access to someone else's firearm. It would be an absolute tragedy for a smart gun to fail or be hacked when it is needed most, as in a self-defense situation.

There is always the inherent risk that government agencies may introduce legislation requiring access to your firearm by wireless means, possibly rendering your firearm useless.

This is something that is already capable and widely in use with smart phones and automobiles. It is a valid concern that this technology could be abused by those seeking further gun control.

Lastly, a smart gun is an infringement on one's Second Amendment rights. There are states, such as California, who are trying to make smart guns the only gun legal in that state.

Smart guns are simply another means of gun control. If laws like this are ever passed for a handgun, it just opens the gate for every other kind of gun to be controlled in this manner as well.

This article does not constitute legal advice. Check the current gun laws before purchasing or traveling with a firearm.
