Sean Connery has over 92 film and television credits, not including appearances in more than 100 documentaries, has been on 52 magazine covers, was once voted People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” and “Sexiest Man of the Century,” and is recognized far and wide for his Scottish brogue and iconic roles.

The Academy Award winner has portrayed many iconic characters throughout his career, some of which helped launch famous film series, but he is known for some better than others, so here are the five roles that defined Sean Connery’s career.

1. James Bond

Connery had already been acting for some years by the time he was cast as James Bond, a role that lasted from “Dr. No” to “Never say Never Again” and five films in between, including “From Russia with Love,” “Goldfinger,” “Thunderball,” “You Only Live Twice,” and “Diamonds are Forever.”

The original Agent 007, his portrayal of the Ian Fleming character helped launch the continuing film series, and he is still considered the most iconic version of James Bond.

2. Professor Henry Jones

In “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” Connery played Indiana’s estranged father, becoming part of the third installment of the adventure saga.

"Who else but Bond could have been worthy enough to play Indiana Jones's dad?" Steven Spielberg told Empire magazine of his choice to cast Connery.

3. Marko Ramius

“The Hunt for Red October” introduced Connery as a Soviet submarine captain in the techno thriller based on a Tom Clancy novel. Connery played alongside Alec Baldwin, who took on the role of Jack Ryan.

Despite Connery's noticeable lack of a Russian accent in the movie, he still brought great presence to the Cold War thriller. It became a defining role for Connery.

"The Hunt for Red October" is the first film in a series of on again, off again installments of Jack Ryan movies.

4. William Forrester

“Finding Forrester,” released in 2000, is one of Connery’s more recent films, but one many consider one of his best. He plays a reclusive writer who helps a young writer pursue his dreams in the critically acclaimed drama.

5. Jim Malone

Connery may not have been the lead of the 1987 film, “The Untouchables,” but it is certainly one of his most iconic roles. He plays a Chicago cop who joins a team tasked with putting an end to Al Capone’s crime spree.

Connery won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his contribution.
