Russell Crowe in Supporting Roles: 5 Times Star Shined Without Being Lead Actor

Russell Crowe hasn't always been the leading man. There have been many Crowe roles that allowed him to shine without being the lead actor, and here are five movies that featured the actor in a supporting role:

1. "Winter's Tale" (2014)

Crowe and Will Smith both signed on to play supporting roles in Akiva Goldsman's directorial debut. The fantasy film dips back and forth between 19th century and present day Manhattan and centers on the love between an Irish burglar and a young woman who is dying.

Crowe played gangster Pearly Soames while Smith played a judge.

2. "Man of Steel" (2013)

Crowe and fellow actors Kevin Costner, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane make up the supporting cast as Henry Cavill (Clark Kent) roams the world covering news stories but returns home to face his destiny to become Superman.

3. "L.A. Confidential" (1997)

Crowe played one of the three Los Angeles cops who in their own styles were all investigating a series of murders. Bud White (Crowe) is the brute one of the three, and it’s interesting that the finest acting in this American film came from the two Australian actors, Crowe and Guy Pearce.

The film works as an ensemble piece and proves that Crowe is just a fine character actor as he is a leading man.

4. "Romper Stomper" (1992)

In “Romper Stomper,” Crowe’s enormous ability as an actor is demonstrated as Hando, the charismatic leader of a neo-Nazi skinhead gang. His performance is just one of three that anchor writer-director Geoffrey Wright’s film.

The other two come courtesy of Daniel Pollock as Davey, a gang member who has increasing doubts about his affiliation; and Jacqueline McKenzie as Gabe, the troubled young woman whose entry into the fold speeds up the group’s inevitable destruction.

5. "Proof" (1991)

The Australian Film Institute awarded Crowe for Best Performance in a Supporting Role for his role as Andy in this jet-black comedy. This powerful and richly developed psychological drama about the leap of faith that is necessary to take if we are to have a full and vibrant life. It is played out in equal parts of irreverent comedy and touching poignancy by Crowe and other characters.
