Rheumatoid arthritis causes inflammation of the joints that results in pain and swelling. Many celebrities who have suffered the effects of the disorder have managed to continue on with their careers to become an inspiration to fans and others dealing with the crippling ailment.

Here are six celebrities battling and overcoming rheumatoid arthritis:

1. Kathleen Turner, an Academy-Award nominee and two-time Golden Globe winner, found out she had rheumatoid arthritis in 1992. She still acts in films and TV while speaking out about the autoimmune disease. She has refused to let rheumatoid arthritis interfere with her acting career and wrote about facing the disease in her 2008 memoir, “Send Yourself Roses.”

2. Camryn Manheim
is well-known for her role as an attorney in “The Practice” from 1997 to 2004. The crippling effects in her hands brought her to a doctor when she discovered she had rheumatoid arthritis at 44. She works to raise awareness about the disorder and encourages people with symptoms to consult their rheumatologists for treatment options.

3. Before Aida Turturro came to the attention of TV viewers as Tony Soprano’s sister in HBO’s “The Sopranos,” she knew the difficulties of rheumatoid arthritis after receiving a diagnosis at age 12. It didn’t stop her from earning Emmy nominations in 2001 and 2007.

4. Celebrity chef Seamus Mullen appears often on Food Network, but many fans would hardly know he has rheumatoid arthritis. He came up with the idea for tapas, small snacks or appetizers, that are perfect for those with arthritis. The recipes are simple and prepared as offerings to guests or during social events.

5. Kristy McPherson is among the athletes with rheumatoid arthritis. She’s been playing golf since age 7, but was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis four years later. Still, she finds exercise helps reduce her pain and keep her involved with the Ladies Professional Golf Association.

6. Pitching sensation Sandy Koufax, who wowed Dodger fans in Brooklyn and Los Angeles, may have had a longer career on the mound had it not been for rheumatoid arthritis. His arthritic elbow forced him into retirement at age 30, and he became the youngest player inducted into the Baseball Hall of fame.
