How To Reverse Global Warming: 5 Ideas That Got Laughed Out of the Room

By    |   Monday, 09 Mar 2015 04:42 PM

Ideas on how to help reverse the effect of global warming range from the practical — hybrid cars and LED light bulbs, for example — to extreme, seemingly wacky proposals. Given the serious threats to the planet, even some of the more radical suggestions merit consideration.

Here are five zany ideas on how to reverse global warming:

1.
Glaciology professor Jason Box has made more than 20 expeditions to Greenland since 1994, and has written more than 60 articles on ice climate interactions. With glaciers melting at an increasing rate, Box has proposed covering Greenland with polypropylene blankets, similar to those used in the Alps to preserve ski slopes in the summer. The blankets are intended to increase its reflectivity.

"Glaciers around the [planet] are decanting into the oceans at shocking rates and I want to stop that," Box told The Telegraph in 2009.

2. Taking an idea from every fourth-grade science project, the 2009 book “SuperFreakonomics” proposed the creation of volcanoes to produce the atmospheric cooling effects of a massive eruption by pumping sulfur dioxide into the air. In a 2012 guest blog post on Freakonomics, scientist Matthew Wilson argued his case for climate engineering.

3. Nearly 15 years ago, former Royal Air Force pilot Jack Walters proposed a way to repopulate forests by dropping "tree bombs" out of old military aircrafts, as reported in 1999 by The Guardian. The fertilizer-containing devices were designed to lodge in the ground and absorb the surrounding moisture. United States manufacturer Lockheed Martin helped the plan take root. The idea gained traction after it was successful in repopulating forests following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

4. If real trees aren't the answer, perhaps artificial trees can help. Made with absorbent materials, the structures mimic real trees by removing CO2 from the atmosphere. The company behind the innovation, Global Research Technologies, could then profit by selling the purified CO2 to "a range of buyers," such as oil and natural gas companies and soft-drink makers, according to NBC News.

5. Cows and other livestock release millions of tons of the greenhouse gas methane into the atmosphere every year. As an outside-the-box idea, some scientists feel that feeding cattle garlic would be beneficial, since the spice can eliminate the methane-producing stomach bacteria that make cow farts so harmful.
