Cutting back and simplifying your life may be the keys to a comfortable retirement anywhere. However, in Kansas, where housing costs are low and the cost of living won't break the bank, you may really be able to enjoy your golden years because you've chosen somewhere affordable.

Overall, the cost of living in Kansas is 12 percent below the national average, and the median home price is $111,000, according to MarketWatch, a financial website that tracks the best cities to retire. Kansas makes the mark for affordable cities to retire, in places like the college town of Lawrence, the business-friendly Manhattan and the Kansas City suburb of Olathe, MarketWatch says.

How much will retirement cost in those places? Consider the fact that housing in the Big Apple's Manhattan is 80 percent more than the Small Apple in Kansas. Groceries and utilities all cost less here than in much of the nation.

LifeHealthPRO, a website for life, health and insurance providers, says Kansas has even more cities that retirees should consider. LifeHealthPro ranks Overland Park, a suburb of Kansas City, as one of "10 of the Best Cities to Retire in the U.S." because of its affordability, jobs rank, activities, quality of life and access to quality health care.

What will make sense for you if you're looking to retire in Kansas? All you really need for a happy retirement is money, health, friends and family, and engaging activities, say Richard Stim and Ralph Warner, authors of "Retire Happy: What You Can Do NOW to Guarantee a Great Retirement."

The authors told USA Today that planning for retirement is more about the journey than the destination. You can't just focus on the city or the money, they say. Rather, you have to stay connected with people, create a space for yourself, stay healthy and deal with life's curveballs.

In the flat prairie grasslands of Kansas, those curves could take you from bike paths and bubbling streams to college towns with football games. Your own backyard could give you the space to relax with family and gaze up at a nighttime sky of stars. The next curveball could be a health crisis that has you searching for a specialist, but that expense could be within your reach, too. It's all in how you plan your retirement.
