Prostate Infection: How to Get Rid of Prostatitis

A prostate infection causes swelling of the prostate gland, which is part of the male reproductive system. Getting rid of the infection may include medication from doctors, home remedies, and possible treatment with alternative medicine.

A prostate infection is known as prostatitis and can be caused by a bacterial infection. However, chronic nonbacterial prostatitis results from long-term irritation of the prostate, according to Medline Plus, a site for the National Institutes of Health.

Men over age 50 with an enlarged prostate are at increased risk for prostate infection.

Prostatitis also can stem from sexual contact, including certain sexual practices and having multiple partners.

Symptoms of a prostate infection include fever, chills, flushing, urinary problems, or pain in the abdomen, with ejaculation, or during bowel movements.

For acute prostatitis, which occurs quickly, or chronic prostatitis, which may continue for several months, antibiotics are given over a period of weeks or more, according to the Mayo Clinic. Other prostate infection treatments may include alpha blockers to relax muscle fibers linked to the prostate, anti-inflammatory drugs for comfort, and prostate massages from a physician. Soaking in a warm bath also may help to relieve symptoms, says the Mayo Clinic.

Besides taking medicine, there are some things prostatitis patients can do at home, such as limiting or avoiding intake of alcohol, caffeine, and spicy foods, and avoiding prolonged sitting or bicycling, the Mayo Clinic says. Using padding may make sitting or cycling more comfortable and cause less irritation on the prostate.

Research shows promising results with alternative therapies to reduce symptoms of prostate infection, according to the Mayo Clinic, which reports acupuncture treatment at various points of the body may alleviate symptoms.

Additionally, biofeedback could help relax muscles and may relieve pain from prostatitis, some studies have shown. The technique involves teaching people to use their thoughts as a way to control their body.

Herbal remedies and supplements have been used in the treatment of prostatitis, but no evidence has confirmed this as a successful method of treatment. Patients should consult a doctor before using supplements for a prostate infection.
