Probiotics and Chobani Greek Yogurt: What You Should Know

The probiotics in Greek yogurt protect the digestive system and also contain nutrients for other areas of the body. Chobani is among the popular brands that provides health benefits.

Greek yogurt has about twice as much protein as traditional yogurt, says Keri Glassman, a registered dietitian and nutrition expert for Women’s Health, and it has about the same amount of calories as regular yogurt.

Greek yogurt is strained three times instead of twice like traditional yogurt, so it has less calcium because of the process, Everyday Health explains. However, Greek yogurt has less sodium and lactose for better digestion, Glassman notes.

Chobani has a variety of yogurt lines that appeal to taste or dietary needs. Aside from its whole-fat products, some of its yogurts, such as Chobani Greek Yogurt Oats, contain real fruit and whole grain oats that provide additional fiber, reports Today’s Dietitian. Chobani also has a variety of low-fat products for adults and children.

Chobani Greek Blended 4% Plain yogurt was named among the 11 best yogurts for weight loss by the nutritional information website Eat This Not That. A 5.3-ounce container has 130 calories, 4 g sugar, 6 g fat, and 13 g protein. The protein-rich product includes 4 g saturated fat, but Eat This Not That points out that the fat content may be just enough to satisfy the appetite and keep people away from eating other snacks.

Consumer Reports rated Chobani Low-Fat products as “excellent” for their taste in 2011. The creamier texture and genuine fruit flavor helped make the difference.

The creamier texture comes from the extra straining process in Greek yogurt, Everyday Health says.

The gut-restoring properties in probiotics can be found in other foods, such as sauerkraut and kefir, but yogurt and other dairy products are enhanced by vitamins and minerals, clinical dietitian tells Today's Dietitian.
