How Does Planned Parenthood Define Expenses?

By    |   Tuesday, 20 Oct 2015 02:22 AM

Planned Parenthood’s 59 affiliates and 700 health centers incurred $1.18 billion worth of expenses and performed 327,653 abortion procedures last year, according to the group’s 2013-2014 fiscal year annual report.

The controversial group that provides contraceptives and abortions to hundreds of Americans, including minors, released that 65 percent of its expenses, or $769.1 million, went toward medical services. Medical services, as Planned Parenthood says, is 42 percent testing and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases and infections, 34 percent contraception, 11 percent women’s health services, 9 percent cancer screenings, 3 percent abortion services, and 1 percent other services.

However, 16 percent of the group’s expenses were for nonmedical program services, which includes $44.6 million in sexuality education, $33.6 million in public policy, $24.7 million in engaging communities, $65 million in increasing access, $14.8 million in building advocacy capacity, $3.6 million in renewing leadership, and $1.8 million in refreshing the Planned Parenthood brand.

Another 12 percent, or $145.9 million, of Planned Parenthood’s expenses went toward management and general support efforts. Additionally, Planned Parenthood put forth 5 percent, or $63.4 million, of its expenses toward fundraising ventures.

The remaining 1 percent, or $9.8 million, of the organization’s expenses fell into its “other” category, which includes payments to related organizations and nonprogram-related costs.

Planned Parenthood’s 2013-2014 costs covered the 10.59 million services it offered Americans last year. Over the preceding two years the group has performed a slightly increasing number of abortions but has decreased adoption referrals by 14 percent, according to a fact sheet made by the Susan B. Anthony List, a nonprofit pro-life organization.

“For every adoption referral, Planned Parenthood performed 174 abortions,” the organization noted.

The organization’s revenue totaled at $1.3 billion, $528.4 million of which came from the government.
