Other interesting personal facts help draw a picture of this 2016 GOP presidential hopeful.

1. U.S. News & World Report said Ryan’s childhood nickname was “P.D.” for Paul Davis, which he eschewed due to its mistaken interpretation as “Petey,” which he didn’t like.

2. Paul Ryan Sr. passed away when his son was just 16 years old. To pay for his bachelor’s degree in economics and political science at Miami University in Ohio, Ryan used his Social Security Survivors Benefits that he had received until age 18, U.S. News & World Report said.

3. In 1992, Ryan began his professional career as a marketing consultant for a construction company. His political career was seeded by Ayn Rand and her economic philosophy of individualism versus collectivism, according to Biography. Ryan laid out his thoughts on Rand in an interview with the National Review.

“I reject her philosophy. It’s an atheist philosophy. It reduces human interactions down to mere contracts and it is antithetical to my worldview. If somebody is going to try to paste a person’s view on epistemology to me, then give me Thomas Aquinas.”

4. In his early 20s, Ryan interned for U.S. Sen. Bob Kasten. The National Journal said Ryan also served as Jack Kemp’s speech writer in 1996, and the elder statesman became an influential mentor, hugely forming Ryan’s views of pushing for a positive and inclusive brand of conservatism.

5. After being elected as a U.S. representative for Wisconsin's 1st District in 1998, Ryan, just 28 and the youngest member to enter the legislative body in 1999, used a converted older-model truck as an office, which expanded his district outreach, according to the U.S. News & World Report.

6. Ryan married Janna Little, an Oklahoma native, in December 2000, after he proposed at one of his favorite fishing spots in Wisconsin.

7. The Ryans have one daughter, Elizabeth, and two sons, Charles and Samuel.

8.
In 2012, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney recruited Ryan to run as his vice president, and the young candidate seemed to be the future of the GOP. While the ticket was rejected by the nation, Ryan was re-elected to his congressional seat in 2014 and continued pushing for budgets that slashed safety-net government programs. He has remained popular with the GOP and he is still considered to be a 2016 contender for president.

Ryan has not yet committed to the upcoming presidential race. In a 2104 National Journal article, Ryan spoke to writer Tim Alberta.

“First of all, I don’t have this really huge ego that some have, where they think, ‘I’m the savior. I’m the guy.’ I don’t think like that. Second of all, I’m a normal person who likes being a normal person. Meaning, a normal family, and a normal life, living normally.” Then he stops to make eye contact with Alberta. “But I know I could do the job,” he asserted.
