Oklahoma Gun Laws: How Do State Laws Apply in Tourist Areas?

By    |   Wednesday, 22 Apr 2015 10:40 AM

There are various attractions in Oklahoma that attract tourists annually. Gun laws allowing the carrying of a firearm in tourist areas are limited to valid concealed handgun license or permit holders only, or residents of non-permitted carry states with proof of residency (such as a driver’s license or other state-issued identification card).

Where the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act license is recognized statewide for the licensee to carry a concealed or unconcealed handgun, out-of-state permit or license holders are also authorized to carry a handgun, as well as residents from non-permitted carry states.

While traveling in a motor vehicle in Oklahoma, a permit holder may carry a concealed or unconcealed handgun in a vehicle, whether as the driver or passenger, loaded or unloaded.

Without a permit, the unloaded handgun must be transported open. The term "open" means the firearm is transported in plain view, in a case designed for carrying firearms, which is visible, in a gun rack mounted in the vehicle, in an exterior locked compartment, or a trunk of a vehicle.

A visitor may choose to comply with the Federal law of having the unloaded firearm in a locked container not readily accessible by any of the occupants (excluding the glove box or console) such as the trunk, completely separated from ammunition.

In Oklahoma state and national parks and forests, a person who possesses a valid concealed handgun license or permit, may carry a concealed or unconcealed handgun, but not in buildings. The same law applies in roadside rest areas.

If you enter a property in which the owner, or person who is in legal control of the premises or property, asks you to leave the premises, you must leave. Failure to do so may result in trespassing charges.

It is prohibited by state law, however, for any person to bring a handgun into a sports arena during a professional sporting event.
