By    |   Tuesday, 21 Oct 2014 03:09 PM

President Barack Obama has long advocated for stricter gun-control measures, especially in the months since the December 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

Not all politicians agree with the president, and here are 9 opposing viewpoints.

ALERT: Should Obama Have More Control Over Guns? Vote Now

1. "Let me speak very directly and candidly about where I stand. I support the Second Amendment as one of the most basic and fundamental rights of every American. It's essential to our functioning as a free society, as are all the liberties enumerated in the Bill of Rights." – Mitt Romney, Sept. 21, 2007, in a message to the NRA's Celebration of American Values.

2. "There are 700,000 physicians in the U.S. and the number of accidental deaths caused by them per year is 120,000, making the accidental death rate per physician 17 percent. Using the same logic, there are about 80 million gun owners, and the number of accidental gun deaths per year among all age groups is 1,500. The same calculation reveals the number of accidental deaths per gun owner to be 0.00188 percent. In other words, statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 more times more dangerous than gun owners. Yet, I hear no one suggesting we ban doctors." – Mike Huckabee, in his 2007 book, "From Hope to Higher Ground."

3. In February 2011, one month after the mass shooting in Tucson, Arizona, that killed six people and critically wounded U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, Sarah Palin responded to a question about whether she would support plans to limit semiautomatic weapons or multi-bullet clips.

"There are already on the books many gun control measures and I do support those that are on the books. I do not support taking away more freedom from the good guy, the people who have no intention of using that weapon to harm another person. So no additional gun control measures could be supported."

4. On Jan. 16, 2013, Texas Gov. Rick Perry released a statement regarding President Obama's executive actions:

"Guns require a finger to pull the trigger. The sad young man who did that in Newtown was clearly haunted by demons and no gun law could have saved the children in Sandy Hook Elementary from his terror. ...

"In fact, the piling on by the political left, and their cohorts in the media, to use the massacre of little children to advance a pre-existing political agenda that would not have saved those children, disgusts me, personally. The Second Amendment to the Constitution is a basic right of free people and cannot be nor will it be abridged by the executive power of this or any other president."

5. "I do not think that more gun control laws are going to solve our crime problems. ... I'm concerned that new gun control laws are going to build up a false sense of security among the people in our country. And we're gonna lose precious time where we can better spend that time passing very important laws that will actually reduce crime." — Former VP candidate Paul Ryan.

6. "My skepticism about gun laws is that criminals don't follow the law. They don't care what the law is. You can pass any law you want, criminals will ignore it." -- Sen. Marco Rubio on "Meet the Press," April 15, 2013.

7. "President Obama's gun control recommendations fall far short in addressing the real issue here — putting an end to gun violence. While the president did propose some reasonable measures, I'm disappointed, yet not surprised, to see so much emphasis on gun control and not enough on key contributors to mass shootings — mental illness and the impact of the entertainment industry's glorification of violence. As a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, I take issue with the Obama administration's effort to take more control of our lives on the gun issue, when we already have reasonable accommodations in place. We have seen time and time again, when law-abiding citizens have used their legal firearms as a means of self-protection; our government cannot stand in the way of that. I come from a state with a rich heritage of hunting and fishing, and will fight to protect our right to bear arms for the sake of the freedoms we cherish as a nation." – Rick Santorum statement, January 2013.

8. "Texas is a lot like Louisiana. We define gun control real simple — that's hitting what you aim at." – Sen. Ted Cruz, May 31, 2014, at a Republican gathering.

Cruz also accused the Obama administration of trying to use the Newtown massacre as "an excuse to go after the Constitutional rights of law-abiding senators."

9. "The very purpose of the Second Amendment is to stop the government from disallowing people the means to defend themselves against tyranny." — Texas Rep. Steve Stockman in January 2013. He added that Obama's gun control policies are a "direct attack on Americans that place all of us in danger."
