New Hampshire is taking center stage in the latest chapter in the national gun control debate. A major change could be coming to New Hampshire gun laws with the passage of new legislation that will make permits for carrying concealed handguns no longer necessary.

ALERT: Should Obama Have More Control Over Guns? Vote Now

This legislation, passed by the New Hampshire State Legislature in February, is the latest example of constitutional carry bills springing up in states across the country. Similar measures are being considered in Kansas, Mississippi, and Montana, according to a report in the Christian Science Monitor. Each one of these bills promises to institutionalize constitutional carry by no longer requiring special permits to carry a concealed weapon in public.

Constitutional carry laws, like the one New Hampshire is considering, has sparked a national debate. Supporters of this type of law draw a correlation between spikes in the number of gun owners obtaining conceal carry permits and a steady decline in rates for murder and violent crime across the United States during the past two decades. Opponents believe constitutional carry laws will make it tougher on law enforcement officials to keep guns out of the hands of mentally unstable people or people with a criminal record and encourage vigilante behavior.

Within New Hampshire, lessening any restriction on gun owners is greeted with enthusiasm. The state has a terrific track record for having lower gun violence compared to other states.

A study done by the Violence Policy Center measured the rate of deaths attributed to gun violence for each state in 2013. New Hampshire had a firearm death rate of 7.03 per 100,000 people during 2013. The state ranked 44th out of 50. Only New Jersey, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, and Hawaii had lower death rates.

New Hampshire and other states trying to put constitutional carry laws into action could push gun control up the list as a major issue during the 2016 presidential election. Many politicians on both sides of the political aisle will be watching to see how things shake out and how the results correlate with their viewpoint on gun control.
