From plentiful casinos to an extravagant nightlife, to enjoying the beautiful scenery at Hoover Dam, Nevada has a lot to offer families looking for a vacation or staycation. Known as the "Silver State,"  there are various activities for everyone in the family.

Here are seven great places to visit in Nevada:

1. Reno has the excitement as Las Vegas, but also has its share of leisure activities. Find some of the finest collections at Antiques & Treasures Downtown in a mall with more than 60 dealers. Items include antiques, collectibles, art, prints and costume jewelry. The mall is open seven days a week.

2. For the kids and the entire family, there's Reno's Whitewater Park and Kayak Slalom Racing Course. Canoeing, rafting, kayaking and tubing activities bring thrills down a wild rafting course. Channels along the course have areas for beginning kayakers and an aquatic rodeo course for more experienced racers. Picnic areas along smooth flat rocks on the riverbanks allow fun for spectators.

3. History buffs in the family will enjoy the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center in Gardnerville. The building is actually a renovated high school that opened as a museum in 1995. Exhibits focus on the early pioneer years with displays on news from The Record-Courier and Farmers Telephone and Telegraph, the history of the area’s medical profession, and Native American murals, artifacts and illustrations.

4. Las Vegas has developed into a family vacation or staycation atmosphere. Even if you enjoy the entertainment and casinos, the whole family will enjoy the five-and-a-half-acre Adventuredome, called America's largest indoor theme park. Located at the Circus Circus hotel and casino, kids and adults can thrill to such rides as the Sling Shot, which takes off like a rocket launch, and the Canyon Blaster, a rollicking roller-coaster ride. There are also miniature golf, bumper cars and clown shows.

5. Pyramid Lake in Nixon in northwestern Nevada offers pleasant, shallow waters enjoyed by swimmers and anglers. The lake is known for its unique rock formations and magnificent views of the mountains. The lake is located on the Paiute Indian Reservation. A visitor center helps travelers with planning for the day.

6.
The historic Hoover Dam, completed in 1936 after five years of work by 21,000 men, is 726 feet high and 1,244 feet across at the top. The mere sight of the structure makes it a favorite tourist spot for families on a staycation, but the area also provide tours, canoeing,  rafting, nature watching and a wonderful view of the Colorado River.

7. Red Rock Canyon, named for its enormous rock formations, has natural walls of up to 3,000 feet high. The scenic area, west of Las Vegas, includes various activities such as hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, horseback riding and even leisurely picnicking. A visitor center and bookstore offer information on the wildlife and vegetation.
