Nebraska Gun Laws: Quotes From Heated Debate

By    |   Monday, 23 Feb 2015 11:31 PM

Debates about gun laws are heating up around the nation as state legislatures begin their 2015 session. Nebraska gun laws have been particularly divisive in state, to the point where the Washington Times has covered the debate. Here are some quotes from the debate to give you an idea of where Nebraska gun laws are headed.

On Jan. 23, 2015, the Nebraska state Legislature heard legislation that would expand gun owner rights in the state. One of the bills would give citizens the right to carry a firearm in their car while at work, even if their employer prohibits concealed carry on their premises.

“At what point do we stop worrying about the private right of the employee and give those up to the employer?” Rod Moeller, of the Nebraska Firearms Owners Association, told The Washington Times.

Private schools’ security forces are also being brought into the debate. A proposed bill would give security teams at private schools the right to carry guns.

“The right answer is not one size fits all. Administrators know the school better than I do, better than you do, senators. LB135 would give them an additional option,” Dick Clark, Lincoln, Nebraska, attorney and member of the Nebraska Firearms Owners Association, is quoted as saying in the Washington Times.

Another aspect of Nebraska gun laws expected to be debated is a federal judge’s ruling that noncitizens may obtain a concealed carry permit in Nebraska, according to a report on Guns.com.

“Upon entry of the final order and permanent injunction, Defendant shall allow Plaintiffs and other lawful permanent residents residing in Nebraska to apply for, and obtain, a permit to carry a concealed handgun, provided they are otherwise qualified to obtain such a permit pursuant to the Nebraska Concealed Handgun Permit Act,” wrote U.S. District Judge Richard Kopf in his ruling.

The debate is heating up, and it will be interesting for Second Amendment supporters and gun control advocates alike to watch the outcome.
