Television sitcoms have surged since 1980, multiplying in number and drawing in major ratings. Many of these situation comedy shows firmly embedded themselves into television history and created long-lasting cultural impacts.

Here are six of the top-rated sitcoms on television since the '80s:

Vote Now: Which Actress Is Your All-Time Favorite?

1. "Friends" (1994-2004)
This sitcom about six friends (and one sibling pair) was in the top 10 rated television shows every year it was on the air, and was the No. 1 show in its eighth season with 24.5 million viewers. The sitcom's finale episode, "The Last One," drew 52.5 million viewers, making it the fifth most-watched finale ever.

2. "The Cosby Show" (1984-1992)
"The Cosby Show" was the most-watched television show for five of its eight seasons (it tied in its sixth season with fellow sitcom "Roseanne" for the top spot). TV Guide called it "TV's biggest hit in the 1980s" and said it "almost single-handedly revived the sitcom genre and NBC's ratings fortunes."

3. "Roseanne" (1988-1997)
This sitcom was one of the first shows to feature a blue-collar family. "Roseanne" was a hit nearly from the start and ranked in the top 10 shows during its first seven seasons. (It ran for nine.) The show tied with "The Cosby Show" for No. 1 in the Nielsen ratings in its second season from 1989-1990.

4. "Cheers" (1982-1993)
During its first season, "Cheers" was nowhere near the ratings it would soon achieve: The show started at No. 74 on the Nielsen ratings, which measure television shows' audience size. By Season 3, the show hit No. 12, and over the next six seasons, the show never left the Top 5, reaching No. 1 during its ninth season.

5. "Seinfeld" (1989-1998)
This sitcom starring Jerry Seinfeld has been called "the greatest television program of all time" by TV Guide, and you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who's never seen an episode. The show ran for eight seasons and spent five of those in the years' top three most-watched shows: No. 3 in Season 5, No. 1 in Season 6, No. 2 for seasons 7 and 8, and No. 1 again for its final season. The finale is the fourth most-watched series finale of all time.

6. "Home Improvement" (1991-1999)
"Home Improvement" may never have hit No. 1 on the Nielsen ratings, but Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor and his family and friends spent every one of their eight seasons in Nielsen's Top 10. The show's series finale, which drew 35.5 million viewers, is the 12th most-watched finale ever.
