The film genre of horror is a divisive topic among many people. Some people cannot stand horror movies and far prefer movies that are light-hearted, and to them, more enjoyable. Others love the tension and fear that comes with watching of a scary movie.

According to The Script Lab, “Horror film is a genre that aims to create a sense of fear, panic, alarm, and dread for the audience. These films are often unsettling and rely on scaring the audience through portrayal of their worst fears and nightmares. Horror films usually center on the arrival of an evil force, person, or event.”

As one would expect, these movies get moviegoers hearts racing considerably more than an average romantic comedy. According to a recent study, those who sit through horror movies can actually burn close to 200 calories due to such an increased heart rate.

As an ode to those responsible for making the average American afraid to leave the comfort of their own home, here are a few modern directors of horror films that stand out.

1. James Wan

Best known for “Saw” (2004), “Insidious: Chapter 2” (2013),and “The Conjuring” (2013), Wan is one of the most popular horror directors in modern times.

2. Wes Craven

According to the IMDb, “Craven has become synonymous with genre bending and innovative horror, challenging audiences with his bold vision.”

3. Oren Peli

Peli is best known for directing the movie series of “Paranormal Activity” which shows perceived paranormal activity in normal American homes, meant to conjure the fear of ghosts in one’s home that many people have, whether or not they choose to admit it.

4. Drew Goddard

Goddard is a rising star in the horror genre. He is best known for his apocalyptic take on America in the movies “World War Z” and “Cloverfield.”

His best-known horror film however, is the critically acclaimed 2012 film “A Cabin in the Woods.”

5. M. Night Shyamalan

No list of modern directors in the horror genre would be complete without including M. Night Shyamalan who is best known for “The Sixth Sense” (1999), “Signs” (2002), and “The Happening” (2008).
