Modern Biopics Directors: 4 Filmmakers Who Stand Out

By    |   Sunday, 26 Apr 2015 07:06 AM

Biographical movies, or “biopics” for short, have been sweeping awards shows and selling out movie theaters in recent years. While the actors and storylines receive much of the acclaim, it is really the directors that are responsible for the films’ successes. Here are the four stand-out modern biopic directors that have made their mark on the recent history of biographical films.

1. Bennett Miller "Capote" (2005), "Moneyball" (2011),"Foxcatcher" (2014)

A born and raised New Yorker, Bennett Miller dropped out of New York University’s film school at age 24, according to Biography.com. Recognized for his uncanny ability to capture his subjects’ personality quirks and complex mindsets, Miller soon found success in the biopics genre.

Miller’s most recent film, "Foxcatcher," was immensely popular at the 2015 Academy Awards. Miller was nominated for the Oscar for Best Director. The movie was also nominated for Best Actor (Steve Carell), Best Supporting Actor (Mark Ruffalo), Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Original Screenplay. This was not Miller’s first romp at the Academy Awards, either. "Moneyball" was up for six awards in 2012; and "Capote," which was only Miller’s second film, was up for five Oscars in 2006, including Best Director. It earned a statuette for Best Actor for Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

2. James Marsh, "Man on Wire" (2008), "The Theory of Everything" (2014)

A British director best known for his documentaries, James Marsh revealed in an interview with Radio Times that he has a “penchant for thrills,” which has perhaps colored his modern biopics films.

In addition to his older documentaries that gained much critical acclaim, Marsh has recently received a lot of media attention for his 2014 film "The Theory of Everything," a biopic on famed physicist Stephen Hawking. Marsh’s depiction of Hawking’s strength in the face of the debilitating diseases ALS received considerable attention, as the film was nominated for five Academy Awards in 2015, winning for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Eddie Redmayne).

3. Clint Eastwood, "American Sniper" (2014)

Beginning his film career as an actor, Clint Eastwood moved behind the scenes in the 1970s. Biography.com defined his debut as a director with the film "Play Misty for Me," which Eastwood also starred in.

Recently, Eastwood has shifted to directing historical films or biographical pictures, with his most recent success being "American Sniper," which tells the remarkable story of U.S. Navy SEAL and sniper Chris Kyle. This movie was nominated for six Academy Awards in 2015, and although it did not win Best Picture, many more wonderful biopics are expected from Eastwood in the future.

4. Morten Tyldrum, "The Imitation Game" (2014)

Unlike the American directors on the rest of this list, Morten Tyldrum hails from Norway, and became a hit filmmaker there with Headhunters, which the New York Times identified as a “stand-alone tale.”

"The Imitation Game," about the Nazi-code cracker Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch), is Tyldrum’s first English-language film, and has been a remarkable success. Tyldrum’s insightful biopic earned eight Academy Award nominations (including Best Director) in 2015, and won for Best Adapted Screenplay. Not even Tyldrum’s biggest critics can deny that this director has huge contributions in store for the modern biopic genre.
