Modern Adventure Television: 3 TV Shows Since 1980 That Shaped the Genre

Adventure can be found anywhere. The best adventure stories always find a way to combine action with dynamic personalities, exotic settings, and engrossing plots. A few modern adventure TV shows have mastered this formula. It has helped these shows remain fan favorites and shaped expectations for the rest of the genre long after their original run.

Here are three shows since 1980 that helped shape the genre:

1. “Magnum P.I.” (1980-88)
During its eight-season run, “Magnum P.I.” showed it was more than a run-of-the-mill private detective show. Thomas Magnum lived in Hawaii and solved cases while being in charge of security at Robin’s Nest – the estate owned by successful author Robin Masters. But Magnum also dealt with the psychological trauma of his past experience as a Vietnam War veteran. It was one of the first TV shows to portray Vietnam Veterans in a sympathetic light.

2. “The A-Team” (1983-87)
Four Army Special Forces officers are court martialed for a crime they didn’t commit and sent to prison. They escape and become soldiers of fortune while on the run. This is the premise for “The A-Team” and it gave the main characters an excuse to get embroiled in a new adventure each week.

“The A-Team” used their military skills to help people in need. The series is noted for its over-the-top cartoonish violence that never resulted in an on-screen death. It also showcased the protagonists’ abilities to fashion weapons from household items – foreshadowing what MacGyver would later do.

3. “Prison Break” (2005-09)
When his brother is framed for a crime he didn’t commit, Michael Scofield gets himself sent to prison so he can break them both out and clear his brother’s name. That central premise fueled “Prison Break.” The show took several satisfying turns over the course of four seasons as Scofield uncovers a vast conspiracy involving a shadowy organization that tried to frame his brother in the first place.

“Prison Break” features some unique twists as a prison drama, such as Scofield tattooing the core elements of his escape plan on his back. Originally, “Prison Break” was planned as a miniseries before being expanded into a full series.
