As gun laws continue to receive national attention with a heated debate from opposing views, we look at the support for and against gun control in the North Star state of Minnesota.

Here are seven quotes from the heated debate:

1. "My reading of the constitution is that it provides a complete permission for any law abiding citizen to possess firearms, whichever ones he or she chooses, and the ammunition to go with that. Now if the Supreme Court rules otherwise, then we will all know how we can proceed." - Gov. Mark Dayton of Minnesota, as reported by the Star Tribune.

2. " ... those in the gun rights crowd want their loaded guns at the ready at all times and if locked up securely where kids and burglars can't get them, they may not be available at that instant when someone comes to take away your guns or tries to break into your home. Which is the greater risk?" - Joan Peterson, Minnesota resident and co-president of the Northland Brady Campaign chapter, Board Chair of Protect Minnesota (an organization working to end gun violence) in her blog post dated April 10, 2015.

3. "Whenever you have a social problem, the responsible thing to do is to hold hearings and get as much information as you can from all sides — and then make a decision about what legislation might be appropriate." - Michael Paymar, member of the Minnesota House of Representatives, in response to re-evaluating state firearm regulations and plans to raise gun control issues, following the Connecticut school shootings, according to the MinnPost.

4. "Connecticut has about three times as much gun control as Minnesota and the Newtown tragedy still occurred." - Joseph Olson, a "pro-gun" law professor at Hamline University, in defense of the state's current firearms laws, as reported by the MinnPost.

5. "I am incredulous that the same people who passed a law last year to get guns away from domestic abusers are now proposing to repeal that law, and all Minnesota gun laws, by constitutional amendment." - Heather Martens, executive director of Protect Minnesota, on HF1289 a proposed constitutional amendment to nullify state gun laws.

6. "The problem is we are now using our emotions to guide our actions. Gun laws do not work. Gun laws do not solve violent crimes. Gun laws reduce the rights of good law-abiding citizens to defend themselves." - Michael Rieschl, a Minnesota resident at a rally at the State Capitol against stricter controls on guns, according to the Star Tribune.

7. " ... we need to make sure weapons of war are not available in the civilian market." - Heather Martens, executive director of Protect Minnesota, in a statement after a rally at the State Capitol against stricter controls on guns.
