5 Quotes From Tea Party Politicians on Increasing the Federal Minimum Wage

By    |   Wednesday, 15 Apr 2015 11:17 AM

An increase in the federal minimum wage is generally supported by both Democrats and Republicans. However, Tea Party Republicans see the issue differently. Voters who associate themselves with the Tea Party are more against the increase than other Americans according to the Pew Research Center.

Tea Party lawmakers do not argue that the minimum wage can support a family. They argue it was not meant to do that, but plays another important role, as a stepping stone towards a career.

Urgent: Do You Think the Minimum Wage Should Be Raised?

Here are five quotes Tea Party politicians on increasing the minimum wage:

1. "If you want to rip the first rung in the ladder of opportunity for teenagers, for minorities, for people who are trying to get into the job market for their first job. The minimum wage doesn't support a family. We all know that. It's not supposed to support a family. The minimum wage is that first job when you have no skills, no experience, no working history. That's how you get into the job market, that's how you develop that experience, develop that work record, get your first raise, then your next raise, then your promotion. That's the first run of opportunity." - U.S. Rep. Tom McClintock (R ) California on C-SPAN January 2015

2. "We have seen some studies that when the government mandates a minimum wage increase it actually hurts people again. Employers are forced to let people go." - Rep. Vicki Harzler, Republican from Missouri's 4th congressional district.

3. "What we are talking about it not really about helping low income workers this is about mandating a starting wage, not a minimum wage, on a select group of states. This is a mandated starting wage because the facts show that two-thirds of minimum wage workers earn a raise already within a year." - Sen. Jim DeMint (R ) South Carolina.

4. "If you raise the minimum wage, the inevitable effect will be, number one, young people will lose their jobs or not be able to get their first jobs." - Sen. Ted Cruz, according to CNS News February 2013.

5. "The Congressional Budget Office released a report which showed that the president's proposal for a minimum wage increase would cost 500,000 Americans' their jobs. There is a better way to grow our economy than a plan that would cost half a million jobs. It is time the President work with House Republicans on how to move people out of minimum wage jobs and create more opportunity so people can move into better paying, higher skill employment to provide stability and opportunity for their families." - Rep. Lynn Jenkins (R), Kansas.
