Wintertime and summertime fun welcome visitors to Michigan for a family vacation or staycation. The great outdoor activities are matched by the many cultural opportunities throughout the state.

Here are seven great places to visit for a wonderful staycation in Michigan:

1. The beaches along Grand Haven are among the best in the country for sun outings, boating and fishing. Visitors may also enjoy the historic downtown district with quaint shops and taking in trolley rides or the many art galleries. Along with the hotel stays, tourists also have a wide selection of lodgings, from vacation homes to rustic cabins and bed-and-breakfast inns anyone can enjoy on their staycation.

2. Mackinac Island is located between the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan. The island is a national historic landmark with structures that date back to the early Native American culture. Visitors enjoy views of the historic Mackinac fort. Activities include trail riding, hiking, biking or walking the natural wonderlands. The area is also known for its splendid horses and horse-drawn carriage tours.

3. For outdoor activities, cultural events, fine restaurants and fun on the water, South Haven is a great getaway for a family staycation.
