Michigan’s gun laws are fairly permissive when it comes to open carry or purchasing a rifle or long gun. However, the state is among the most restrictive in the country when it comes to carrying in public places.

Here’s a look at Michigan gun laws and how they compare nationally.

Handgun Concealed Carry: Michigan and 48 other states allow concealed carry of handguns in some form or fashion. Only Illinois and Washington, D.C., strictly prohibit concealed carry.

Handgun and Long Gun Open Carry: Michigan does not restrict open carry of handguns or long guns. Most of the states — 44 — allow open carry either without restrictions or with a permit. A total of six states and Washington, D.C., ban open carry of handguns and long guns, according to OpenCarry.org.

Permits and Registration: Michigan is one of 12 states requiring a permit in order to purchase a handgun and guns must be registered with local law enforcement. When it comes to requiring a permit for purchase of a long guns, Michigan’s law is vague. However, the state is one of only four in the country, plus Washington, D.C.m that has some form of long gun registration.

Stand Your Ground/Shoot First Law: Michigan is among 27 states to enact laws allowing a person to defend themselves in public using deadly force with no duty to retreat.

Locking Devices and Missing Firearms: Michigan requires a locking device when transporting guns. It is one of 12 states with such a law. Michigan also is one of just eight states that require notification of authorities when guns are lost or stolen.

"Pistol Free Zones": Michigan has the country’s most restrictive and expansive law when it comes to restrictions on carrying firearms. Carrying is strictly forbidden in all school settings, anywhere alcohol is served, places of worship, sports arenas and hospitals.
