House Bill 1, which officially legalized medical weed in the state of Georgia, went into effect on April 16, 2015. The new law, also dubbed “Haleigh’s Hope Act,” makes oil possession legal for people who suffer from cancer, ALS, Crohn’s, mitochondrial disease, sickle cell disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, and seizure disorders.

The law allows individuals to possess up to 20 fluid ounces of cannabis oil if a physician signs off and files the appropriate paperwork. Georgia became the 36th state to pass such a law.

Urgent: Should Marijuana Be Legalized in All States?

Georgia’s Department of Public Health is working with law enforcement to make sure the system is secure and that officers know what to look for when they come across a patient possessing the cannabis oil, according to AJC.com.

Here’s what lawmakers had to say about the new medical marijuana law.

1. "We can now begin the highly anticipated process of bringing our medical refugees back home to Georgia," said bill sponsor, GOP Rep. Allen Peake of Macon, according to USA Today. He was referring to the number of people who have left the state seeking medical marijuana in a legal environment.

2. “For the families enduring separation and patients suffering pain, the wait is finally over," said Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal as he signed the bill, USA Today reported. Many ill children, who will benefit from the law, were in attendance to witness the historic moment.

"It's touched my heart," Deal said, tearfully. "I'm just pleased that today we're going to make a difference and it's going to be a good difference."

3. Lawmakers in neighboring states weren’t completely supportive of the measure, including North Carolina’s Rep. Dean Arp. He told the Christian Science Monitor, “Obviously the stories are heart-wrenching” he said, in Raleigh, after a legislative hearing on the same issue. “Still, I don’t think [medical marijuana] is appropriate.”

4. “Until we have an in-state cultivation process and delivering system in Georgia we are going to continue to face these hurdles for our citizens," state Rep. Allen Peake, R-Macon. According to the International Business Times, Allen was referring to the law against cultivating marijuana that impedes many from acquiring the now legal cannabis oil.
