Legalizing Weed: Five Quotes From Lawmakers After Pot Failed to Become Legal in Indiana

By    |   Wednesday, 20 May 2015 09:28 AM

Every state in the nation has its own quirks. Things like speed limits, popular fast food chains, and accents vary from place to place.

The same is true when it comes to marijuana laws. Some states legalize it in all ways (Colorado and Washington) while others like Indiana do not legally allow an individual to possess any amount of the drug.

Hoosiers live in one of 27 states that have not legalized weed for medicinal uses, and in early 2015, yet another attempt to pass legislation changing that was eschewed by lawmakers. Lawmakers provided five quotes in the media after pot failed to become legal in Indiana:

Urgent: Should Marijuana Be Legalized in All States?

1. “It’s time to do this.”

Sen. Karen Tallian (D-Portage) gave this succinct quote to the Indianapolis Business Journal in a January 2015 article about politicians pushing for another chance to pass a medicinal marijuana bill in the state. She had already failed to get five different bills that would decriminalize weed to pass with no success.

2. “We need to be informed about it, but I don’t know how much traction it will get.”

Senate Majority Caucus Chairman Jim Merritt (R-Indianapolis) told the Indianapolis Business Journal that Tallian’s proposal for a bill legalizing marijuana for medical use didn’t have much chance of approval.

3. “I am not giving up on this topic during the 2015 session. I am determined to have the necessary debate on this topic during this session of the Indiana General Assembly. I am exploring options to amend current legislation to include medical cannabis as a viable medical alternative for the citizens of Indiana.”

TheDailyChronic.net quoted a Facebook post from Tallian, in which she said that she was not giving up the fight for medical marijuana legalization. This came after her bill failed to make it out of the Senate Health and Provider Services Committee.

4. “If you look at states that have medical marijuana or have legalized marijuana, they’ve made a mockery of it. They’ve actually tainted the well for states that want to take a more legitimate look at this issue.”

Sen. Brent Steele (R-Bedford) was quoted in the Batesville Herald-Tribune on Feb. 3 as saying that he would not support legalization yet, even though he had come out years earlier saying he was in favor.

5. “It’s dead for this year… so I can work with her over the summer and learn a little bit more about this issue before we hear it.”

Senate Committee on Corrections and Criminal Law Chairman Mike Young (R-Madison County) told this to WISH-TV in 2013. This happened after he said he wasn’t ready to take up a bill proposed by Tallian that would have decriminalized possession of small amounts of marijuana.
