Today marks the 450th anniversary of Russia’s St. Basil’s Cathedral, the San Francisco Chronicle
The Cathedral stands outside the Kremlin on the Red Square in Moscow.
Russians will celebrate the anniversary by opening an exhibition dedicated to St. Basil, the religious dissenter who stood up to Czar Ivan the Terrible, and other “holy fools.”
The cathedral was built in 1561 to celebrate Ivan’s conquest over Mongol rulers, and is upheld by believers to be a place for miracles and healing.
It has become known over time as the place where St. Basil is buried.
