Even though the total area of the State of Israel is only 8,630 square miles, the geography and landscape of the state varies from coastal plains, mountain ranges, and desert to beautiful sandy beaches, fertile farmland, and densely populated cities. At the widest point, Israel is approximately 85 miles across and this short distance can be traveled by car in less than two hours. Travelers can make the journey from the northernmost tip to the southern end of Israel in about nine hours.

Whether visiting highly populated city attractions or the more remote landscapes such as hiking and beach destinations, visitors to Israel will find the following travel tips useful.

Vote Now: Should the U.S. Continue to Support Israel?

1. The basics: Before traveling to Israel, it is important to have an in-depth understanding of travel requirements. For example, the need for a passport, options for travel insurance, and pertinent information on security issues including airport security and travel advisories. Visitors should pack for the appropriate season and have at least a fundamental familiarity with the geographical regions, borders, and customs in the state.

2. Travel in Israel: Public transportation in Israel is not only convenient, it is considered affordable and visitors can use the system of buses, railways, and even the more expensive option of city taxis to reach their destinations. In general, travel by bus is the most popular choice and detailed bus schedules, ticket options, and destination information services are available online.

In addition, the railway system in Israel connects all of the major cities and some of the lines run directly to and from the more popular tourist destinations. Visitors also have the option of using a car rental service and there are both international and Israeli-specific companies from which to choose. These companies do require a driver’s license, a major credit card, and a passport.

It is important to note that some public transit services change their schedules to accommodate Jewish customs and holidays.

3. Travel guidebooks: Because Israel is a popular tourist destination, there are multitudes of guidebooks available that provide detailed information on the geographical terrain of Israel as well as sightseeing destinations. Many of these guidebooks have been written by Israeli-based authors who have a unique understanding of local customs and knowledge of travel destinations that may be off the beaten path.

4. GPS travel guide apps: These technologically advanced tools are especially handy as they act as personal tour guides, provide GPS navigation tools, and generally work on both smartphones and tablets. GPS apps are a lightweight and convenient option for tourists and they provide updated roadmaps as well as maps of the various trails that lead to more remote geographic destinations.

5. Travel for the handicapped: Israel has taken great care to make sure that its handicapped visitors are fully accommodated. Access Israel is a site that provides comprehensive information for handicapped travelers including tourist site accessibility and personalized travel planning advice.
