Though Israel is often in the news for unrest, the country holds a wealth of beauty and wonder. Israel geography is framed by the Mediterranean on the west and mountains to the north with desert, fertile land, and populated areas all within a short distance of each other.

With a land area of 8,367 square miles, Israel is a little bit larger than the state of New Jersey, but diverse enough to travel from the mountains to the plains in just minutes.

Here are five links to sites to learn more about Israel’s landscape before heading there.

1. GoIsrael.com provides a good overview of the country’s main geographic regions. The coastal plain region on the western strip includes the densely populated section and major cities, such as Tel Aviv and Haifa. The Jordan Valley Rift makes up the third major region on the east, stretching through the entire length of Israel with the Red Sea at the south.

2. The Jewish Virtual Library takes visitors on an educational journey with a featured section on Israel geography. Learn about the structure, history, and physical data of the nation’s major cities and regions from Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and the Sea of Galilee to Gaza and Sinai.
