Hunting in West Virginia: 9 Animals to Hunt in the Year-round

By    |   Friday, 05 Jun 2015 04:12 PM

Hunting enthusiasts in West Virginia can enjoy several animals that can be hunted year-round. If the animals are a nuisance or dangerous, the population of this animal must be lowered in order to prevent more damage to humans, crops, and buildings.

Sometimes, a friendly population of animals can turn mean because of a change in environment or food source. A population may need to be thinned because the conditions in the area are too good for the animal.

This means that they are breeding at a rate that is not sustainable for the ecology around them. If one animal is overbalanced, the whole food chain may be thrown off. Finally, an animal may be hunted year round even if its population is not alarming. This is done sometimes when a state relies on hunting tourism.

By providing the animal to be available to hunt year round, the state's economy will run smoother. West Virginia's reasons are a mix of all of the above. Here are a number of animals you can hunt year round in West Virginia.

1. Crows
In West Virginia, crows are legally available they are being hunted for nuisance reasons only; they may be hunted year round. The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources defines "nuisance crows" as, "crows committing depredations upon ornamental or shade trees, agricultural crops, home gardens, livestock, or wildlife, or when concentrated so as to constitute a health hazard and or other nuisance."

2. Coyotes

3. Skunk, Opossums, Woodchucks, and Weasels
Opossums, skunks, woodchucks, and weasels are available to hunt all year.

4. English Sparrow, European Starling, and Pigeon
English sparrows, European starlings, and pigeons are all birds that may be hunted throughout the year. However, all hunters should take care that they are completely sure of what breed of small bird it is before they shoot it.
