Game and Fishing magazine advises readers to consider hunting smaller game
as well as large in the fall. This is because in West Virginia, those who hunt small game in the fall, such as squirrels, rabbits, and hares will collect a large harvest.

Fall is the season during which hunters can legally choose from the largest selection of species. Here are 12 animals to legally hunt in West Virginia in the fall:

1. Wild Boars
Gun season for wild boar runs from late October to early November. Archery season is from late September to late December.

2. Deer

To hunt deer using archery legally, hunters should go between late September and late December. The season to hunt antlerless deer is a split season, the dates of which run between late October and late December.

3. Bears
The archery hunting season for bears is between late September and late December. Selected counties in West Virginia have an open gun season between early mid-September and late December. You can check here to view which counties are open.

4. Wild Turkeys
Turkey may be hunted in West Virginia from mid-October to mid November.

5. Squirrels (Gray, Black, Albino, and Fox)

These four breeds of squirrels may all be hunted from mid-September to late January.

6. Ruffed Grouse
Those who hunt ruffed grouse must do so between mid-October and late February.

7. Bobwhite Quails
These birds are legal to harvest from the beginning of November to the beginning of January.

8. Cottontail Rabbits
Hunt these rabbits from the beginning of November to the end of February.

9. Snowshoe Hares or Varying Hares
Both of these hares have the same open season, from the beginning of November to the end of February.

10. Raccoon
Raccoon season stretches from mid-October to late February.

11. Gray Foxes
Gray foxes may be legally harvested from the beginning of November to the end of February.

12. Bobcats
Anyone who seeks to hunt this elusive creature must do so between the start of November to the end of February.
