Hunting in Pennsylvania: Are Safety Courses Required to Hunt in Pennsylvania? How Do I Pass Classes?

By    |   Thursday, 28 May 2015 03:36 PM

The Pennsylvania Game Commission offers various hunting safety classes that are either required for certain certifications, or recommended for certain types of hunting. These courses teach basic hunting techniques, in addition to ethics and safety.

The following are four safety courses related to hunting in Pennsylvania:

1. Basic Hunter-Trapper Education Course
All prospective hunters must complete this course before buying a hunting or trapping license in the state of Pennsylvania. The Basic Hunter-Trapper Education course helps students become skillful, knowledgeable, and safe hunters by teaching firearm handling techniques, wildlife conservation information, basic survival skills, and ethical considerations.

There are three formats for this course. The first consists of a six-hour classroom session in conjunction with pre-class independent study. The second is an eight-hour classroom session that requires independent study portions and consists of a skill-station format, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission. An exam concludes every format of the course, which students must pass in order to graduate.

2. Successful Bowhunting
In order to obtain Pennsylvania Bowhunting Education Certification, which never expires, hunters must complete the Successful Bowhunting course; however, this course does not replace the Basic Hunter-Trapper Education course.

This course consists of pre-class online independent study and a combination of classroom and live training. The class teaches bowhunting techniques, basic anatomy of big game, map and compass skills, and distance estimation. The course culminates in a written examination.

3. Successful Turkey Hunting
This course teaches turkey hunting rules and regulations, shot selection skills, map and compass techniques, and turkey calls. Part online independent study and part classroom lecture, the course ends in a final examination.

Upon passing the exam, students receive a certificate. Like the Successful Bowhunting course, this course does not replace the Basic Hunter-Trapper Education course.

4. Successful Furtaking and Cable Restraint Course
Upon completion, hunters will receive certification allowing them to legally use cable restraints to hunt coyotes and foxes, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission. In addition, this course provides the certification necessary to purchase a furbearing license.

The course consists of an independent online portion, classroom instruction, and hands-on training. The Successful Furtaking Course teaches hunting ethics, furtaking techniques, basics of traplines, and land and water sets. It concludes with a written examination.
