North Dakota's rich hunting grounds bring thousands of hunters and millions of dollars to the state every year, and each part of the Peace Garden State is best at something. Here are some of the top spots for hunting in the state.

1. Deer
Members of the bowhunting forum Bowsite.com recommend public lands in the northern part of the state, particularly in the Turtle Mountains and around Minot Air Force Base, for whitetail deer and in the Badlands for mule deer.

2. Moose
The eastern third of the state and all along the Canadian border are where you go to find Bullwinkle's relatives, which are mostly in the Turtle Mountains and along forested rivers.

3. Pheasant and Grouse
The southwest part of the state is best for pheasant, according to GameBirdHunts.com. Sharp-tailed grouse are to be had in the central and west-central parts of the state, with ruffed grouse in the extreme northern part.

VOTE NOW: Is North Dakota Sen. Heidi Heitkamp Doing a Good Job?

It helps to know your grouse. Hunting seasons have been cancelled in recent years for sage grouse and pinnated grouse, also known as "prairie chicken," because of low population, notes the North Dakota Game and Fish Department website.

4. Pronghorn
The North Dakota Game and Fish Department restricts hunting of this distinctively antlered species – the fastest land mammal in North America – to a specific hunting unit in the southwest corner of the state.

5. Waterfowl
Whether it's Canadian geese, ducks, or diving birds, the eastern half of the state is the place to hunt waterfowl, according to the conservation group Ducks Unlimited, which calls North Dakota the "heart of the prairie duck factory." Federal protection areas, state management areas and private lands enrolled in the Private Lands Open to Sportsmen (PLOTS) program offer a variety of hunting opportunities.
