Hunting in Colorado: 4 Animals To Hunt Year-Round

By    |   Saturday, 23 May 2015 04:12 AM

Sportsmen must be aware of the season when planning for hunting in Colorado. Each state in the United States dictates when and where a species can be hunted within boundaries. Wildlife agencies that govern the activity sell licenses, establish approved areas for hunting, and determine seasons for hunting specific game. Hunting in Colorado in summer limits sportsmen to species designated by The Colorado Department of Parks and Wildlife, which establishes hunting seasons and provides information on subjects that pertain to licenses, fees, education, hunting locations and more.

A few species are legal to hunt in Colorado at any time throughout the year. However, most species are available only during the time periods established by the state. Fall and winter offer the largest number of legal game but hunters can be active throughout the year.

1. Rattlesnakes

They are found throughout most of Colorado but are less common in cold, high-elevation areas. The snakes like grasslands, sandhills, shrublands, woodlands, and sandy soils. Rattlesnakes can often be found in the wedges between rocks or in a pile of logs. Of course, the horny rattle on the end of its tail is the rattlesnake’s distinguishing feature.

2. Coyotes

These canine predators live throughout the state of Colorado, despite attempts to control their population. The availability of food sources dictates where they gather, so forestlands, farms, and trash sites are favorites for these omnivores.

3. Eurasian Collared Doves

They prefer open woodlands and prairies but they can also be found around cities. Doves love seeds, those found near farms and in the forest, such as weed seeds and wild flower seeds.

4. Ground Squirrels

They are found in nearly every corner of Colorado. Various species roam through cities and forest areas, ranging from tiny versions to rock squirrels that can be up to 20-inches-long. Ground squirrels are active during the days and their preferred diet includes seeds and fruits.

According to the Colorado Department of Parks and Wildlife, annual licenses for small game are valid from April 1 to March 31 of the following year. Hunting seasons are subject to change and hunters should check the Colorado Department of Parks and Wildlife website to keep current on seasonal issues. Hunters can confirm the legality of species, get GPS map information, and find help in getting necessary licenses and permits.
