How to Reverse Global Warming: 3 Articles that Offer Innovative Solutions

By    |   Tuesday, 10 Feb 2015 03:15 PM

Technology innovators are working to try to figure out how to reverse global warming by weaning humanity off fossil fuels and reducing the impact of greenhouse gases. Silicon Valley has focused, for now, on determining how to turn popular clean energy options such as solar, wind or nuclear into a cheap, reliable source of carbon-free power.

"That's just the tip of the (melting) iceberg, though, when it comes to what innovators are dreaming up to reduce the impact of global greenhouse gases," The Washington Post said.

Here are three articles that offer alternative innovative solutions:

1. A 2013 Washington Post article discussed potentially using solar radiation management as a way to cool the planet. The 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo, a volcano in the Philippines, blasted enough fine particles and sulfur dioxide gas into the atmosphere to envelop the earth in a high-altitude cloud for the better part of two months.

When scientists checked in 1992, they determined the cloud had deflected enough sunlight to cool the planet by about 1 degree. The National Academy of Sciences, conducting research funded by the CIA, NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, was investigating the possibility of deliberately attempting solar radiation management to try to deal with climate change.

2. A National Geographic article published in 2014 described efforts to use the largely unproven technology of carbon capture and storage. The process essentially takes some of the carbon being burned from traditional fossil fuels such as coal and converts it into a harmless gas underground so that it doesn't enter the atmosphere.

The concept has been hailed for decades by some as an essential solution to the climate problem but pilloried by others as unworkable and a dangerous distraction. It indicated the concept was just beginning to be tested at full commercial scale at locations in Mississippi and Saskatchewan.

3. A 2011 National Geographic article told of how some hope to deal with climate change using carbon recycling, which would be done by extracting carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and recycling it for fuel. The same way people recycle paper or plastic. Pioneering researchers and entrepreneurs say the technology is close at hand for recycling carbon monoxide back into fuel for use in today's engines.
