Top 6 Ways to Reverse Aging

By    |   Friday, 27 Mar 2015 12:03 PM

It doesn't take an extraordinary miracle to reverse aging. Simple procedures that help you think and feel young include hormone therapy, healthy eating and protective measures.

Here are six top ways to reverse aging:

1. Keep your liver healthy. The liver has one of the most important functions in your body, according to Dr. Sandra Cabot, author of "Fatty Liver: You Can Reverse It." The vital organ cleanses and detoxifies the blood of impurities, getting rid of toxins, dead cells, chemicals and excessive fats that can age the body. Concentrate on eating unprocessed foods, including plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables to aid in liver function.

2. Hormone replacement therapy replaces the hormones that have been lost in menopause with synthetic hormones to treat symptoms and to avoid age-related osteoporosis, a bone-degenerating disease. Hormone therapy also helps to slow aging, says Dr. Cabot, who also specializes in hormonal imbalances. Natural estrogen replacement could also lower a woman's biological age as much as eight years younger than the chronological age, according to Dr. Cabot.

3. Protecting your skin from the sun helps to avoid premature aging of the skin, which can bring on early lines, wrinkles and age spots. The UV rays from the sun accelerate aging skin, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Apply sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher whenever you plan to go outdoors. Apply moisturizer every day because lines and wrinkles are also caused by dryness. Moisturizers seal water in the skin for a glowing, youthful look.

4. Limit your consumption of saturated fat, found in meat, poultry and dairy products, reports Fitness Magazine. Trim fat from meat and only eat skinless poultry. Go for low-fat dairy products. Saturated fat stores up in your body to put on extra pounds. Healthy fats include omega-3 fatty acids, which encourage the body to retrieve fat and use it for energy, according to Dr. Nicholas Perricone, an anti-aging specialist. It can be found in salmon, walnuts and fish oil supplements, omega-3s maintain your youthful, healthy figure.

5. Reducing stress in your life will reverse the emotional and physical toll tension and anxiety can create. Yoga, meditation and regular exercise help to regulate blood pressure and avoid anger, insomnia and depression, according to Fitness Magazine. Meditate your worries away for 20 to 30 minutes a day or learn some yoga exercises. Take walks or ride a bike daily to improve circulation and reduce the effects of everyday stress.

6. Protect your immune system with antioxidants. Consume foods, especially fruit and vegetables, with high amounts of antioxidant-rich vitamins A, C and E. By strengthening your immune system, you lessen your risks for age-related inflammatory and degenerative diseases and infections, says Dr. Cabot. Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol, which can damage the immune system.
