Doris Day's Acting Credentials: Awards and Highlights of a Storied Career

Doris Day's spectacular career has spanned movies, TV, and music, with her many best-selling records and hit movies earning praise and awards from fans and critics alike. As a result, the film and music industries have given her high praise, through a number of nominations and awards. Day has collected numerous awards, including Oscars, Golden Globes, Grammys, and many more. Here is a look at some of her most noteworthy achievements.

1. Academy Awards

For her acting Day only received one Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role, that for 1959's "Pillow Talk," an award she lost to Simone Signoret. However, her songs fared much better than she did. Songs that Day sang on film that earned Oscar nominations for Best Song include "It's Magic" from "Romance on the High Seas" (1948) and "Secret Love" from "Calamity Jane" (1953), the latter of which won the award.

2. Golden Globe Awards
Day had more success bringing home the hardware from the Golden Globe Awards. She was nominated seven times as actress, including two for her television show, "The Doris Day Show." She also earned nominations for many film roles, including "The Tunnel of Love," "Pillow Talk," "Midnight Lace," "Billy Rose's Jumbo," and "Move Over, Darling." Although she did not win for any of her performances, she did take home the prize for the Henrietta Award (World Film Favorites) five times: 1955, 1958, 1960, 1963, and 1966. She also was awarded the Cecil B. DeMille Award in 1989 as a way of honoring her illustrious career.

3. Grammy Awards
Day earned more nominations and lifetime achievement honors from the Grammy Awards, too. She was nominated for Best Vocal Performance twice: In 1958 for "Everybody Loves a Lover" and in 1960 for "The Sound of Music." Her version of "Sentimental Journey" also earned a Hall of Fame nomination in 1975, but did not win. However, it did eventually win in 1998 and was joined the next year by "Secret Love." Finally, the Grammy Awards honored Day with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.

4. Other Awards
Day has also earned a slew of other awards during her career, including the 2004 Presidential Medal of Freedom, a Lifetime Achievement Award in Comedy from the American Comedy Awards, and eight Golden Laurel Awards for being the Top Female Star. She has also earned two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, one for her motion picture career and one for her music recording career.
