Henry Repeating Arms is one of the top five long-gun manufacturers in the United States, and the largest lever-action maker. Despite the marketing references to Benjamin Tyler Henry, the company traces its roots to an Italian saddle-maker from Little Italy in New York in 1911.

The Imperato family acquired the Henry name in 1996 after U.S. Repeating Arms, which was the successor to Winchester Repeating Arms, declared bankruptcy in 1989 and closed its U.S. plants, according to Joe Kurtenbach writing for The Daily Caller. U.S. Repeating Arms was sold off to a Belgium-based company, which now manufactures all its products overseas.

Benjamin Tyler Henry patented the original Henry Rifle in 1860. Only about 14,000 of the original rifle were ever made. The modern Henry Repeating Arms now manufactures a near-replica chambered to a modern .44-40 caliber cartridge.

Henry Repeating Arms is headquartered in Bayonne, N.J., at a waterfront plant. The over-100,000-square-foot building was severely damaged during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. “I'm trying to look on the bright side,” said Anthony Imperato, president of the company in a Jersey Journal article. “At this point we could have been out of business. Its going to be a miracle that its going to be a four- to six-week recovery and I think well come back stronger from it.”

The company also has a large 138,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Rice Lake, Wis. The company purchased the plant in 2006. After the New Jersey plant was damaged in 2012, the company doubled its Wisconsin workforce and moved some of its rifle lines to the inland plant.

The hunting and shooting sport culture in Wisconsin is more in-line with the company's mission than New Jersey. “Our employees there have done an outstanding job of creating a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility,” Imperato said in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. I have a lot of faith in them. Also, its easier to find employees who like to go hunting and like to use guns in Wisconsin — very talented folks.”

The company has approximately 250 employees split between its two locations. The Wisconsin location will be adding about 30 to 35 employees per year over several years, doubling the plants work force, Imperato told The Journal Sentinel.
