Researchers keep finding out new things about the foods we eat and the impact those foods can have on our hearts and our overall health. Here are some heart-healthy foods that are trending now.

1. Chia seeds
These powerful tiny seeds are similar in texture to poppy seeds but much healthier for your heart because they significantly lower bad cholesterol levels to protect your arteries from clogging and stiffening, according to Organic Facts.

2. Avocados
These fruits are loaded with healthy monounsaturated fats that can help lower cholesterol, but they are also high in potassium and antioxidants as well.

3. Probiotic foods (such as yogurt and kefir)
Eating Well reports a Japanese study published in the Journal of Periodontology found that probiotic dairy products including yogurt and kefir, a fermented drink, protect against gum disease. Gum disease can lead to heart disease if it progresses too far without being treated.

4. Ultra dark chocolate
The darker the chocolate, the more benefits it has for the heart, including thinning the blood and keeping blood vessels healthy as well as lowering blood pressure. Moderation is the key, however, since dark chocolate is also high in caffeine, fat, and sometimes sugar (depending on how it is made). Seventy percent cacao or higher is usually best.

5. Chickpeas
Any kind of beans will have heart-healthy benefits, but chickpeas have surfaced in a recent study as a good cholesterol-lowering food, according to U.S. News and World Report. Chickpeas are also a good alternative to wheat for those eating gluten-free, being used in everything from cookies to flour.

6. Kale
What makes kale a superfood for your heart is lutein, which protects against early atherosclerosis, and a unique compound called glucoraphanin, which helps to create a Teflon-like coating in your arteries that keeps plaque from sticking, according to Prevention.

7. Concord grape juice
The benefits of red wine for the heart have become well-known, but for kids and non-drinkers, 100 percent Concord grape juice also contains high levels of the same polyphenols that give red wine its heart healthy benefits.
