As an alternative medicine proponent, Dr. Joseph Mercola often bucks standard medical practice, such as vaccinations, and speaks out against what he feels are the overuse of prescription drugs and surgery to treat conditions, instead advocating for approaches such as magnetic healing, psychic powers and homeopathy.

Mercola's views on heart disease and blood pressure include six factors that can predict a heart attack, according to his website, he writes, "This year alone (2015), 920,000 Americans will have a heart attack, and nearly half will occur suddenly and without warning. Remember the most common symptom of heart disease is actually sudden death."

A healthy diet and exercise, not smoking, and limiting alcohol consumption and television watching were listed as ways to improve heart health, as well as reducing stress.

Citing research, Mercola says "having a bout of intense anger (is linked) with an 8.5-fold higher risk of experiencing a heart attack in the following two hours. Stress and pain also often go together, and a number of pain medications, including aspirin, ibuprofen and Celebrex can heighten your heart attack risk."

Practices such as yoga, meditation, mindfulness training help reduce stress. Dr. Mercola lists fructose as a cause for higher blood pressure levels.

"The first thing you need to do is remove all grains and sugars from your diet, particularly fructose, until both your weight and your blood pressure have normalized," Dr. Mercola wrote in 2010.

"Eating sugars and grains — including any type of bread, pasta, corn, potatoes, or rice — will cause your insulin levels and your blood pressure to remain elevated."

In a 2010, Dr. Mercola listed a "15-minute heart cure" on his website and cautions that lowering your blood pressure by using certain drugs may increase your risk of death, according to a study.
