Obama is pushing for tighter control of gun sales. His proposition includes stricter background checks and a unified reporting system between the states, as detailed in his "Now Is the Time" plan.

As part of Obama’s 2013 gun control proposal, military and assault weapons should be restricted to law enforcement.

Proactive Investigations
Recently, President Obama issued an order to the Justice Department and attorney general’s office, encouraging them to push for more convictions and arrests. But the numbers prove otherwise. During his presidency, federal law enforcement and prosecutors have arrested 25 percent less gun cases in 2014, the year following his proposals. Furthermore, former President George W. Bush, who was an advocate for gun ownership rights, prosecuted nearly 7,000 cases in 2008, while Obama’s team prosecuted just over 5,000 in 2013, according to a report by The Washington Times.

Recent high-profile school and public shootings were by people with mental illnesses, and serve as a stark incentive for more and better diagnosis and treatment for those suffering from mental illness.
