Kimber History: How One of Biggest Firearms Brands Came to Be

By    |   Wednesday, 22 Apr 2015 05:01 PM

Originally founded as Kimber of Oregon by Jack Warne and his son, Greg in 1979, the company faced hard times in the 1980s, according to HandgunsMag.com. As a result, the company was sold to an Oregon lumberman who tried to revive the company.

Unable to save it, the company filed for bankruptcy, opening the door for Greg Warne to resume using the Kimber name.

Three years after the company went bankrupt, Les Edeleman, who owned a sporting goods company, bought controlling interest of the company. It was his decision to move the company’s manufacturing from Oregon to the East Coast. The company now has locations in New York and New Jersey.

Maintaining their original facilities in the northeastern part of the country is becoming somewhat unusual, according to American Rifleman’s John Zent. In an article that they published in 2014, they identify over 40 locations where companies have moved their manufacturing down south to avoid the increase in anti-gun regulation in the northeastern part of the country.

It was the addition of Edelman that helped bring Kimber to greatness. During the annual SHOT Show of 1995, the company received an endorsement for its Model 1911 from speed-shooting champion Chip McCormick, according to HandgunsMag.com. The initial production run for 5,000 units was quickly exceeded and the company was soon shipping over 40,000 units each year. According to the company's You Tube video, they are the largest producer of 1911's worldwide.

While holding true to its heritage with the 1911, the company has expanded its product line. Kimber’s current catalog now features 19 pages dedicated to 1911 models, along with additional pistols, seven pages with rifles and less-lethal products, such as the PepperBlaster series. Depending on the specific model, the price of a new 1911 will cost between $900 and $1,600 from leading sporting goods retailers Cabela’s and Bass Pro Shops.

One of the latest innovations offered by the company is its Micro Raptor .380 ACP pistol. It expands their Micro Pistol line to five, all of which have a 2.75 inch barrel and weigh less than 14 ounces. This makes them ideal for concealment/carry purposes as well as for people with smaller hands.

According to the company, the U.S. Shooting Team, the Los Angeles Police Department’s SWAT Team and the U.S. Marines assigned to the Central Command all use Kimber firearms. Those testaments to how well the firearms work has proven to be a source of pride for the company and an effective marketing technique to show people how well their firearms work.
