Montana ranks 8th in a 2014 list of the best states for gun owners compiled by Guns and Ammo. "Montana is a hunter's paradise, but even gun owners who don't hunt can enjoy Big Sky Country's favorable laws."

Montana received a high score of 45 out of 50 based on right to carry laws, restrictions on sporting rifles, National Firearms Act rights, Castle Doctrine and a miscellaneous category.

Here are six spots for firearms and pistol practice in the state of Montana:

1. Northwest Shooter: Located in Columbia Falls, this gun range has 10 shooting lanes, multiple target styles, and allows rimfire rifles. Firearms for rent include handguns, tactical rifles, shotguns and machine guns. The facility also has a Virtual Training Simulator, which provides hundreds of realistic life or death simulations and accommodates up to four people at a time.

"The entire experience was one that I had dreamt of ever since holding my first cap pistol ... and I was not left wanting," writes a reviewer on Google.

2. Three Sights Indoor Range & Gun Sales: Located in Billings, this climate-controlled range has 10 shooting lanes, allows two people in each booth so friends can shoot together and is handicap accessible. Basic firearm instruction, one-on-one training is available as well as "Tactical Tuesdays" where shooters are encouraged to "think like a warrior."

"The people here are always so friendly and helpful. I have been there several times and it has always been a good experience," writes a reviewer on Trip Advisor.

3. Broadwater Rod & Gun Club: Located in Townsend, this facility has three ranges. Canton Lane has a 10-station 50-foot indoor range and four trap houses. Indian Creek has an outdoor range from 100 to 1,000 yards and a sporting clays range, and the Black Ram Archery range provides a 3-D target course.

"If you live in the Broadwater or Lewis & Clark county areas, please take advantage of one of the best gun clubs I have visited," reports the Montana Outdoor Radio Show.

4. Blue Creek Sporting Complex: Located in Billings, this gun range includes 27 bench rests with targets between 25 and 300 yards. An additional 100-yard range is available for muzzleloaders, pistols and rimfire rifles. A 28-station and walking course archery range, two skeet and trap fields and a game bird preserve round out the facility.

"Owner and staff are all wonderful folks, and a very beautiful facility!" writes a reviewer on Facebook.

5. Deer Creek Shooting Center: Located in Missoula, this gun range is operated by the Western Montana Fish and Game Association. Shooting opportunities include 25 to 50-yard bays for pistol shooters, 100-yard bays for rifle shooters and a dedicated shotgun area with a clay bird thrower. Youth shooters have a .22 rimfire bay with reactive targets.

"Just Joined! Awesome range!" writes a reviewer on Facebook.

6. Yellowstone Big Gun Fun: Located in West Yellowstone, this "family fun" gun range provides the opportunity for gun enthusiasts to shoot machine guns, handguns, and semi-automatic rifles in a unique movie-themed environment. While it is not a traditional gun range, a certified range master is onsite and some instruction is provided.

"This was my first time learning how to shoot, and I had a blast! I had great support and safety support from the employees there and they were so friendly. Big Gun Fun has great displays of what targets you can shoot. Great villains!" writes a reviewer on Trip Advisor.
