Gun Dog: Are Pudelpointers Good Dogs for Family Pets?

By    |   Sunday, 22 Nov 2015 09:40 PM

With their calm, friendly nature and ease of training, Pudelpointers are gun dogs that double as great family pets, with one caveat: you need to have plenty of open space and the high activity level the breed requires. For active, outdoorsy families with large yards, and especially families that enjoy hunting game birds, the Pudelpointer is a top choice, according to Dogable.

Pudelpointers are active hunting dogs by nature, so do best in rural areas or suburban areas that have plenty of enclosed outdoor space. While Pudelpointers make good house dogs, they do need space, and are not a good choice for apartment dwellers and families with small yards. These gun dogs need at least an hour of exercise a day, unleashed when possible, according to DogsReviewed.com.

Pudelpointers are highly trainable, good natured, and do well with kids, especially active kids who like to play outdoors. Indoors, trained Pudelpointers are well-behaved, with a medium to large size that requires adequate space in the house. They don’t require a lot in terms of their own space, just a dog bed or cushion for sleeping.

One of the big advantages to having a Pudelpointer as a family dog is that they are very low-maintenance in terms of grooming, Dogable said. They can be tolerated by some allergy sufferers, and they leave very little dog hair, so are a good choice for families looking for a dog that won't add substantially to the housework. Generally, Pudelpointers need little more than a weekly brushing and an occasional bath when needed.

Although on the large side and loyal, Pudelpointers are not guard dogs, as they are generally not aggressive or confrontational. They will bark if someone approaches your home, so can act as a deterrent, but this breed is not for families looking for a dog to provide protection.

Pudelpointers love the water and are great swimmers. Families who live on or near a lake or pond, hunt and fish, and take outdoor vacations are an especially ideal fit for this breed.
