Gun Dog Breeders: Golden Retriever Facts

By    |   Wednesday, 18 Nov 2015 05:40 PM

Prized by hunters for their instincts in the field, golden retrievers are ideal gun dogs. Their even demeanor also makes them great family pets, and the breed consistently ranks as one of the most popular.

The breed’s heritage traces back to the Scottish highlands and the British aristocracy. According to Golden-Retrievers.com, the dogs were bred in the estate of Sir Dudley Majoribanks, also known as Baron Tweedmouth. Majoribanks crossed a yellow-colored Retriever with a female Tweed Water Spaniel. The site states that, “Because of Majoribanks’vision of perfection of the hunting dog, the bloodline was inbred and selected for strongest, most vigorous, gentle and trainable."

The American Kennel Club started recognizing the breed in 1925. In 1938, the Golden Retriever Club of America was formed.

Golden retrievers make loving pets and loyal companions; their personality is associated with being happy, likely due to the ever-present "smile" on their face. They are also cheerful, generally friendly with all humans and creatures, and eager to please their masters.

Breeders of the dog emphasize that in addition to being great companions, golden retrievers are also proficient gun dogs. The dogs flush and fetch upland game birds as well as retrieve downed waterfowl from rivers, lakes, and reed-covered wetlands.

Golden retrievers excel in other types of working situations where human interaction is important. Acting as guide dogs for the blind, assisting in recovery efforts during disaster relief efforts, and providing companionship for the elderly or disabled are a few of the tasks they perform exceptionally well.

Regardless of individual personal living situations, golden retrievers adapt well to families large or small, remain loyal throughout their life span, and offer dog lovers an animal that responds to any affection shown to them.
