Grace Kelly: Roles She Missed That Other Actresses Made Famous

She was a film star, a style icon, a princess, and a victim of tragedy. When her car plunged off a mountain road in 1982, Grace Kelly was 52, and her fairytale life as Princess of Monaco seemed unfinished.

Decades later, Kelly's short stint as a Hollywood star is still bright, with her performances in movies such as “To Catch a Thief,” “High Noon” and “Rear Window” leading the way. Her career spanned just 11 films, but they were memorable ones.

On April 18, 1956, shortly after she finished filming the movie “High Society,” Kelly became royalty herself when she married Prince Rainier III of Monaco.

Here are some of the roles Kelly didn't take, which other actresses made famous:

"Cat on a Hot Tin Roof"
Kelly was at the top of the list for playing Maggie Pollitt in the 1958 film version of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” author Eila Mell says in “Casting Might-Have-Beens: A Film by Film Directory.” Instead, Kelly married Prince Rainier and retired from acting. Elizabeth Taylor made the movie part famous.

“Designing Woman”
James Stewart loved working with Kelly, “who was perfectly cast as his witty, determined girlfriend in ‘Rear Window,’” author Helene McGowan says in her book, “James Stewart.” MGM had plans to put them in a second film, 1957's “Designing Woman,” McGowan says, but Kelly withdrew when she married the prince. Lauren Bacall got the part that "[provided] Bacall with perhaps her best star vehicle in films aside from the early Bogart/Bacall pictures," said Turner Classic Movies.

“North By Northwest”
Hitchcock, the famous director, loved his famous star, describing Kelly as “a snow-covered volcano.” He may have cast her in films such as “North By Northwest” until she ran away and married a prince. Eva Marie Saint got the princess’ role in “North By Northwest.” Some of Kelly’s former co-stars still considered her the one that got away. As the New Jersey Star-Ledger reported years later, “To Catch a Thief” co-star Cary Grant called her, simply, “the finest actress I ever worked with — forgive me, Ingrid, Kate, Audrey and all the others.”

Even when she left Hollywood behind, Kelly always said she was comfortable just being alone. “I love walking in the woods, on the trails, along the beaches,” Town and Country magazine recalls as a favorite Kelly quote. “I love being part of nature. I love walking alone. It is therapy. One needs to be alone, to recharge one’s batteries.”
