Two controversial global warming documentaries, "The Great Global Warming Swindle" and "An Inconvenient Truth" make statements of "fact" about climate change based on interpretations of data and the testimony of experts in climatology. However, both former Vice President Al Gore, who was the impetus behind "An Inconvenient Truth," and Martin Durkin, British producer of "The Great Global Warming Swindle," strayed from simply documenting scientific data and brought political aspects of global warming into the films.

ALERT: Is Global Warming a Hoax? Vote Now

In the Oscar-winning 2006 documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth" Al Gore makes the key point that human activity is to blame for an increased concentration of greenhouse gases, which is causing global warming. He claims that the U.S. and other countries are "using old technologies that are dirty and polluting," and that while in 650,000 years the CO2 level has never "gone above 300 parts per million" it is now rising relentlessly. Gore claims the devastating impact of global warming includes a "20-foot rise in sea level," and increased hurricanes and other weather related disasters. He claims that while people in the past have made mistakes, they were able to "overcome the consequences" but that now, "We don't have the luxury anymore. We didn't ask for it, but here it is."

Al Gore states in "An Inconvenient Truth" that in order to save the planet, "We have everything we need, save perhaps political will." The film has a political impact because it bolsters the platform of environmentalists and lays blame for global warming on fossil fuel industries, which are the backbone of global energy resources. The film claims there is a scientific consensus on the issues of climate change, closes the door on scientific debate, and creates a partisan platform for environmental regulation that has a direct effect on the economy.

VOTE NOW: Are You Concerned About Global Warming?

In the 2007 documentary "The Great Global Warming Swindle," Martin Durkin makes the case that global warming is a natural, cyclical phenomenon and that there is no consensus that changes in climate are caused by human activity. One scientist in the film states, "There were periods for example in our history when we had three times as much CO2 as we have today or periods when we had 10 times as much CO2 as we have today … If we look at climate from the geological timeframe, we would never suspect CO2 as a major climate driver."

"The Great Global Warming Swindle" asserts that the environmental movement is really a "political activist movement" that requires all political parties to "pay homage to the environment." According to Durkin, "The most politically incorrect thing possible is to doubt this climate change orthodoxy. Climate change has gone beyond politics; it is a new kind of morality." He further claims that the conclusions made by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate change are "politically driven."
